In peatlands, there is plenty of water and very little oxygen. This is an environment of extremes, a habitat for specialised species. Plants and animals that are well adapted to these conditions find food and shelter here: in the wet soil, on the water surface and in the air. Peatlands also benefit the climate in another way: they store vast amounts of carbon and lock it away for thousands of years.
